Ren Ji Hospital, founded in 1884, is a municipal tertiary hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University, School of Medicine. It was the first western medical hospital in Shanghai after port opening.
Department of general surgery in Ren Ji Hospital was founded in 1952 by a famous Chinese surgeon, Professor Xichun Lan who had UK clinical experience at the time. Also, this was considered an early general surgery department affiliated to an educational medical college in recent Chinese history. In 2012, it was qualified for the State Key Department by national government.
The division of gastrointestinal (GI) surgery was specialized from general surgery in 2013. It contains 150 beds. Most of the surgeons in GI surgery have received doctor and master degree. Many of the medical crews take positions in Chinese Medical Association. The areas of gastro-enterology and colo-rectal-anus are the main sub professional branches of the division.
The gastro-enterologic branch has been emphasizing on the standardized and minimally invasive surgical treatments on gastric cancer and GIST. More than 1000 cases of gastric cancer are treated in our hospital every year. The rate of early gastric cancer in our hospital is about 20%. Among them, more than 150 cases are performed by EMR or ESD in Ren Ji endoscopic center. Meanwhile, laparoscopic surgeries for gastric cancer increase annually. About 200 cases of laparoscopic gastrectomies were performed last year. We also started to perform laparoscopic assisted pyloric preserving gastrectomies (LAPPG) from 2014 and till now, we have already finished more than 40 cases. The initial experience of this procedure was introduced on international and domestic conferences. The 3rd generation Da Vinci robotic system was acquired in our hospital in September, 2014. We have already performed more than 130 cases of robotic GI surgeries. We also set up the MDT for gastric cancer as a core division. More than 400 cases of difficult cases from across the country are referred here for consultation till now. The division of GI surgery has ranked one of the top divisions in Shanghai tertiary hospitals in terms of out-patient number, in-patient number, operation number, operation varieties, and operation difficulties. The accomplishments from the sub professional branch have received great public recognitions.
Recently the division has successfully received all levels of government fund in different areas. Currently, the divisions focused on the gastric cancer and GIST in both clinical and basic areas. Most notably, the division joined several national-wide clinical multi-centered RCTs, such as the CLASS series, the NEO-CLASSIC trials, and so on. As for the laboratory, it focused on translational medicine, molecular biological and oncological investigation in gastric cancer and GIST.

Spearheading clinical research in gastroenterology in China, the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University is well known for its high academic and clinical standards. It is striving to become a modern general hospital with a global reputation.
The Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU), also called Guangdong Gastrointestinal Hospital, is a large, first-class hospital in southern China. A general hospital with excellent clinical resources, it has 1,200 beds, two-thirds of which are for patients with gastrointestinal diseases. More than 15,000 gastrointestinal operations are performed at the hospital each year.
After extensive clinical practice, the hospital has formed three strong technical forces in the fields of traditional Chinese medicine, western medicine and combination of both. It has achieved a national advanced level.
Treating gastrointestinal conditions
The hospital is well known for its expertise in gastrointestinal and colorectal surgery. Its gastroenterology is rated as a national key subject, while several of its main subjects under general surgery have been recognized as key medical specialties of Guangdong province since 2009 and as national key clinical specialties by the Chinese Ministry of Health since 2012. The hospital headed the compilation of the 2010 and 2015 editions of Therapeutic standards of colorectal cancer and the 2010 edition of Guidelines for the diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of liver metastasis of colorectal cancer. It has greatly contributed to China’s progress in standardizing the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal conditions. The Sixth Affiliated Hospital of SYSU was selected to be the chair institution for colon, rectum and anus surgery by the Chinese Society of Surgery. It was also chosen to be the chief editor institution for the eighth edition of the state-compiled textbook Surgery.
Top research facilities
The Sixth Affiliated Hospital of SYSU is home to the SYSU Research Institute of Gastroenterology (RIG; also known as the Institute of Gastroenterology of Guangdong Province), which houses the Guangdong Key Laboratory of Colorectal and Pelvic Floor Diseases. With a total area of 5,000 square metres, SYSU RIG has a central laboratory, a molecular diagnostic laboratory, a database centre, a tissue bank and a biotherapy centre. It currently has 45 scientists, including 14 professors and 16 associate professors, and its annual research budget exceeds 20 million RMB.
Collaboration and publications
SYSU RIG is active in international collaboration. Working with University of Washington (UW), it has established the SYSU–UW Institute for Translational Medicine. A research institute focusing on personalized medicine for gastrointestinal cancer has been set up in collaboration with Lee Hartwell, Nobel laureate and director of the Partnership for Personalized Medicine. A pelvic disease research centre has been established — the only one of its kind in China — with the assistance of a 3 million RMB donation from Masahiro Takano, a famous Japanese gastroenterologist. SYSU RIG has conducted innovative research on colorectal and pelvic diseases to address practical needs. Its researchers have published papers in high-profile international journals, including Cancer Cell, Gastroenterology and Gut. These studies provide a good foundation for setting up guidelines for diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal diseases. The hospital is the host institution for three journals: the Chinese version of Diseases of Colon and Rectum (official journal of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and a world-leading publication on colorectal surgery), Chinese Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery (a national core journal included in PubMed, and rated among the top 200 medical science journals and the top three surgery journals in China) and Gastroenterology Report (listed in Science Citation Index in 2016)
